A Picture of Health - Built in Weebly

3/11/2016

This is a site we've been developing for A Picture of Health, a new program spearheaded by the Initiative for Rural Innovation & Stewardship (IRIS).

We built this site in Weebly so that it would be easy to edit and update by the staff of this non-profit organization. It also allowed us to turn around this project on a very tight timeline: from storyboard to completion in less than a week. (We do still have a bit of SEO work to do to finish up.)

Russ Alman was the project lead for the Picture of Health website, and Connie Hill did most of the actual setup and design. Connie is used to working in platforms where she hand-writes more of the code, but she was impressed with how intuitive and flexible the Weebly platform is.

With a whole lot of help from our friends and partners IRIS, Community Choice and Moses Lake MAC have created the first...

We use Weebly specifically for situations where a client wants minimal fuss and will be actively managing and editing their own website, especially if they have limited knowledge of web design basics like HTML and photo editing. Weebly's interface is entirely drag-and-drop, and it can even automatically resize and optimized photos. Yet it still gives designers access to more advanced features, like embedded code areas for hand-written HTML and scripts, and even direct access to the CSS files for making fine adjustments to templates.

While a Weebly-built site is less flexible than one built on an open content management platform like Joomla or Wordpress, Weebly offers all of the tools needed to build a website that not only looks nice, but also performs well in search engines. Without getting into too many technical details, it supports the key features that Google and other search directories look for, such as customizable page titles, natural language page links, header tags, and blogs with category tags. We have tested website that we've built in Weebly and they perform just as well in search engine placement as sites built in Joomla and Wordpress once the search engine optimization (SEO) features have been fully implemented.

Also, all Weebly sites have mobile-friendly options, and Weebly's newest templates fully support responsive design, which allows sites to automatically adjust to the type of device and screen size that is being used to view it. Mobile-friendly design is now an important requirement for all websites. With mobile devices playing such an important role in search engine traffic, Google now identifies websites that have mobile-friendly interfaces and gives them preference in search results.

We are so confident in Weebly as a website design platform that we built our own site in it! Of course, as a website design company, we could have built our site in any platform, but we used Weebly as proof of concept that the platform is a viable option for businesses to use for specific instances.

Take a look at the Picture of Health website and let us know what you think!
